Wrekin College Swimming & Triathlon Club Squad On the 28th July - 1st August 2010 swimmers from Wrekin College Swimming & Triathlon Club attended the British Gas ASA National Age Group Championships (50M) 2010 held at Ponds Forge in Sheffield. The competition was attended by all the top qualifying swimmers in the country including swimmers from as far away as Guernsey, Belgium and Turkey to name but a few. This is the last event in the swimming calendar year, and a real achievement for all the swimmers that attended and the perfect setting to show off the immense ability of these young swimmers.

Day One - 28th July 2010
Megan Carline (Aged 11) started the proceedings in the first event of the Nationals in the 200M Individual Medley finishing with a new personal best (PB) time of 2:42.59, and also qualifying for the finals to be swam in the evening. Later on that day, saw Paige Norry-Addison (Aged 11) and Lauren Holland (Aged 11) competing in the first heat of the 1500M Freestyle. The two swimmers both swam exceptionally, virtually stroke for stroke with each other for the first 1000M, when Paige just started to gain a slight advantage which she continued to build upon to the finish. Paige finished in a time of 19:53.72 gaining a 12 second PB and Lauren finished in a time of 20:00.43. Next up saw Megan also competing in the 1500M Freestyle event, Megan set off with a blistering pace and finished in a magnificent time of 18:55.11 setting a new 11 second PB and collecting the first ever National medal for the club with a Silver medal, narrowly missing out on the Gold by just 4 seconds. "Wow". Then up to race was Alexandra Harris (Aged 13) who again swam confidently and gained a 6 second PB in a time of 18:13.96. Finally, Megan swam in the finals of the 200M Individually Medley and after her performance in the 1500M still managed another PB with a time of 2:42.20 and secured 7th position overall. What an amazing start to the Nationals.

Day Two - 29th July 2010
Today saw both Megan and Alexandra back in action in the 400M Freestyle event. Up first saw Megan who swam well finishing 2nd in her heat with a new PB of 6 seconds with a time of 4:53.57 and gaining a place in another final to be swam in the evening. Alexandra swam inside her entry time with a time of 4:38.34 but just missed out on making the finals by just 3 seconds. In the evening Megan swam a similar time in the finals just outside her PB and came home in 8th place overall.

Day Three - 30th July 2010
Another early start and another day of racing... This time the event was the 200M Freestyle with both Megan and Alexandra in action. Megan swam a time of 2:25.02 and Alexandra swam a time of 2:13.28 both just missing a place in their respective finals by just over a second. Then Megan and Alexandra both competed in the 200M Butterfly event where Megan swam a time of 2:48.44 and Alexandra swam 2:35.00 both again narrowly missing a place in the finals by just a few seconds. After lunch saw the girls 800M Freestyle event with Paige and Lauren again back in action. Paige again swam superbly and gained another PB with a time of 10:31.50 finishing 26th overall. Lauren in the following heat swam well with a time of 10:27.87 finishing 23rd overall and both finishing on a high at their first Nationals. Well Done girls. Megan also competing in the 800M Freestyle event swam a time of 10:00.96 and finished 5th overall in her Age Group. After a long day of hard competition saw Alexandra swimming in the event and recording a time of 9:39.11 and securing 18th place overall in her Age Group.

Day Four - 31st July 2010
Now saw the arrival of two new faces at the Nationals with Sophia Baig (Aged 12) and Holly Barnett (Aged 13) to accompany Megan (Aged 11) and Alexandra (Aged 13) in the 4 x 200M Freestyle relay team event. With many of the larger clubs having the luxury of being able to rotate their swimmers for the heats and finals, saw Wrekin College racing in the second heat. Off first and setting the pace was Holly, with her first swim at Nationals followed by Sophia on the second leg also her first swim at Nationals. The third leg was swum by Megan who touched for Alexandra on the final leg. This was a great team effort and a first for a club from Shropshire, but unfortunately they were just off the pace and they were unable to achieve their target which was a place in the finals.

Day Five - 1st August 2010
On the final day of a very gruelling week for the swimmers, coaches and spectators saw Megan once again competing in the 400M Individual Medley event. With renewed vigour Megan swam an exceptional heat and gained yet another place in the finals with a new PB of 4 seconds with a time of 5:38.79. As the day drew to an end Megan swam her last race of the 2010 Nationals and secured herself 8th place overall in her Age Group.
