Wrekin College Swimming & Triathlon Club Squad On the 3rd - 7th August 2010 swimmers from Wrekin College Swimming & Triathlon Club youth squad coached by David Clarke attended the British Gas ASA National Youth Championships (50M) 2010 held at Ponds Forge in Sheffield. This competition follows the Age Group Championships which was held the week before.  Attending this years were Olivia Phoenix (Aged 14), Maddy Tracy (Aged 15) and Alice Cousins (Aged 16) who have all worked extremely hard during the year to reach these championships.

Day One - 3rd August 2010

The youth championships started with the 400M Individual Medley event with Wrekin College being represented by both Maddy and AliceMaddy swam a time of 5:16.74 whilst Alice swam 5:17.99 although both times where just outside there PBs both girls fought hard in this tough middle distance event as they raced seasoned International swimmers. Great job girls and a great start to the meet!

Next in action was Olivia in the 200M Backstroke event.  Olivia swam a time of 2:29.94 which was just off her PB of 2:27.49.  This event was very competitive with some tough competition from both British and non-British swimmers.  Although Olivia didn't qualify for the final of this event, this was a brilliant swim and a great way to finish off a very successful season for her.

This was a solid start from our Youths with some impressive swims from our girls. These Championships are always very competitive, and qualifying for these Championships is not something that comes easily, and shows the amount of dedication these young swimmers have shown over the season - let's keep it up for next season!!

Day Two - 4th August 2010
Today saw Maddy again in action in the 400M Freestyle event. Maddy set off with the older girls over the first 300M, but found the pace a little too quick and she just dropped back slightly over the closing stages finishing in a time of 4:38.59 which was just down on her entry time 4:33.68.  Great effort Maddy.

Day Three - 5th August 2010
Day 3 is traditionally the 'flat' day in a five day meet like the National Youths, however our swimmers stepped up to the mark with some impressive swims.

Off first was Alice in the 200M Freestyle event who recorded a time of 2:15.02 in her heat.  Then next to swim in the 200M Freestyle event was Maddy who swam a time of 2:16.25.  Both girls attacked this race swimming against the likes of Amelia Maughan (European Youth Olympic Champion) and Sophie Smith (European Junior Champion), two outstanding Junior Internationals to give you an idea of the level of competition.  Well Done both our girls.

After lunch saw Maddy again in action this time in the 800M Freestyle event and finished in a time of 9:27.04.

Throughout the week, Youth Group coach David Clarke was pleased with everyone's swims and said:

Wrekin College Swimming & Triathlon Club has only been formed one year, and we've already had several individual swimmers qualify for the National Age Group and Youth Championships. Our squad is still very small and quite young but we will go from strength to strength over the coming seasons.  A huge WELL DONE to all of our National Age and Youth competitors!   Enjoy the summer break and come back ready for another successful season.
