Congratulations to Wrekin College Swimming & Triathlon Clubs very own Paige Norry-Addison (Aged 13) who has been selected to attend the ASA England Talent Development Programme and will attend training camps during September and December 2011 at Coventry Leisure Centre along with all the other top swimmers from within the West Midlands Region.
The camp will be predominately skill based and be a positive experience for the swimmers. The ASA Talent Development Programme envisage the camp to be a stepping stone for these swimmers to move forward with there swimming careers, and hopefully onto podium success.
Thousands of children go through the ASA's club structure every year but only a handful ever progress to national squads. The ASA has a development pathway to ensure that once a child's talent is identified it is nurtured to help them reach their full potential.
As a sport it can take 10 years to produce a champion so in most cases a youngster will be 'spotted' within their club environment and nurtured within their club.

Alexandra Harris (Aged 13) made swimming history becoming the first girl from a Shropshire club to qualify for the British Gas British Championships - no mean feat for a 13 year old who only started swimming two years ago.
Alex qualified in four events but only competed in three. It is a daunting and serious competition with none of the light atmosphere of the Bagcats or National youth events. Depsite not swimming her best, Alex gained a huge amount of experience; as one of the youngest swimmers in the competition she had the opportunity to compete with some of the UK's most elite swimmers including Rebecca Adlington and Fran Halsall.

Whilst National Qualifying Times (NQTs) are the mechanism to enable event organisers to control the number of people accepted for an event, they are often used by coaches and seen by parents as an achievement of a standard.
If you have achieved a Regional or National qualifying time and it is not listed below, please contact the Communications Office with the details so we can update our records.

On the 30th September saw Telford and Wrekin Council hosting the glittering Active Lifestyle Awards Evening at Oakengates Theatre. This is to celebrate the achievements of sporting performers, teams and clubs within the area and was attended by more than 200 people. Supported by RICOH UK, the event saw more than 60 awards presented at the evening that was hosted by BBC Radio Shropshire's Eric Smith. The awards included 34 sports scholarships split into gold, silver and bronze for individuals who perform at regional or national level in their chosen sport.
Receiving bronze awards on the night were Wrekin College Swimming & Triathlon Club's members Paige Norry-Addison (Aged 12), Macauley Carline (Aged 14) and Alice Cousins (Aged 16) all for recognition for their achievements in swimming during the past year and silver being awarded to Alexandra Davis (Aged 13) for her achievements in the modern pentathlon, who also swims for Wrekin College. Congratulations and Well Done.
However, although we already knew it; it has now been recognised by Telford and Wrekin Council that Wrekin College Swimming & Triathlon Club has officially the best coaches in Shropshire with Rachel Reilly our Age Group Coach winning the highly coveted Coach of the Year Award. Rachel has also since been short listed for the Shropshire Energise awards evening on 21st October at the Shrewsbury Town football club. Congratulation to Rachel in recognition for all her hard work in developing alongside our Youth coach Dave Clarke the most successful and competitive swimming club in the region.

On the evening of the 26th November Megan Carline (Aged 12) headed to the Stockport Metro Long Course Open Meet held in Stockport, Manchester to compete in the 800m Freestyle event and claimed her first National Qualifying Time (NTQ) of the season with an incredible time of 9:47.82 and a 7 second PB and the first NTQ for the club for 2011.
Megan swam in the second heat and started strongly and after the first 100m mark was in sixth position in a heat made up of mostly 14 year olds, but as the race developed Megan settled into her stroke and started to make her way through the field. By the 400m mark Megan was up to fourth place and now with the leading group which were pulling away from the other swimmers.
At the 600m mark Megan had moved her way into third place and was closing the gap on second place with every stroke.
On the turn of the final 100m Megan kicked hard off the wall and edged into second place and was now on the shoulder of the leader. The leading three swimmers all turned together for the final 50m and this was now a race to the finish with Megan still holding onto second place.

Congratulations to Megan Carline (Aged 12), Lauren Holland (Aged 12) and Paige Norry-Addison (Aged 12) from the Wrekin College Swimming & Triathlon Club on being selected to attend the ASA West Midlands Beacon Medley Age Group training programme being held at Coventry during November, January and May. These swimmers were all selected in recognition for their excellent performances in the ASA National Age Group Championships held in July and August earlier in the year and is a real achievement.
The Beacon Medley programme was developed to provide training and coaching opportunities within the region, to swimmers that have the potential to reach the higher levels of swimming in the future. The aim of the camp is not only to provide swimmers with the opportunity to train in a long course pool, but also give swimmers and coaches the necessary education and tools in areas such as nutrition, injury prevention, and land based training in order to give the swimmers the very best chance to reach their goals. The camps are also designed to give an insight of what to expect on the ASA Regional Talent Development camps that also run every year.
Our Age Group Coach Rachel Reilly has also been selected to attend the programme to assist in the coaching.
