Introduction to Aquathlon Print
Triathlon
triathlon_logo_thumbThe sport of aquathlon consists of a continuous, two-stage race involving swimming followed by running.  Within England, The British Triathlon Federation sanctions competitions and governs the sport http://www.britishtriathlon.org

Some people do an aquathlon to prepare for a triathlon and to improve their transition time between events, but others just enjoy the sport for what it is. Aquathlons are great events because they are inexpensive to compete in and they don't require as much training time as a triathlon.

Although aquathlons are popular with many amateur athletes, it is also a professional event. There are Local, Regional, British, European and World Aquathlon Championships each year.  The European and World Championships demand qualification to enter and are very popular with British age-groupers!

What equipment will you need?

You won't need as much equipment for an aquathlon as you would for a triathlon. However, at the very least you will need goggles, a swimsuit (or trisuit), and running shoes. If you are swimming in open water or during a month when the water is cold, you might want to purchase a wetsuit as well.  But there are many events that are pool based.

tri_logoHow far do you have to swim and run?

Distances vary by *age and event, but a typical example of distance per age group is:

*Age for the year is calculated as age on 31/12/10

Group Age Swim (m) Run (m)

Tristar 1 9 / 10 100 1200
Tristar 2 11 / 12 200 1800
Tristar 3 13 / 14 200 1800
Youth 15 / 16 400 4000
Adult 16+ 400 5000

Practice Makes Perfect!

Training for an aquathlon can be fun because you can divide your focus between two sports and get pretty good at both of them – without needing to be elite in either!  Within aquathlon there is a third discipline – which is often overlooked! – This is the transition.  It's always a good idea to spend some time practicing transitions, since it's difficult to put on your running shoes and race number when you get out of the water.

Most junior races take place within a pool based swim.  However, older juniors and seniors may wish to take part in aquathlons that have open water swims.  In which case, you will also want to practice swimming in open water. In fact, it's a good idea to practice in the type of water you'll be swimming in, since rivers, lakes and the sea all present their own advantages and challenges.
