On 20th November, Wrekin College Triathlon Club took its biggest team yet, to compete in the Burntwood Aquathlon, a team of 28 racers rose to the challenge in one of the last races of the year; it was a very cold, foggy early morning start!
There were many outstanding performances, with four of the athletes winning their category outright, these included Jordan Stamp (TS3), Joel Roura (TS2), Ellie Russell (TS2) and Jess Humphreys (TS1). Jordan's victory was particularly pleasing, he moves into the youth category next year, and has already proved himself to be an impressive rising talent, indeed he has just been invited to join the West Midlands Talent Academy for promising triathletes!

On Sunday 25th September Wrekin College Swimming & Triathlon Club held there first Team Relays … we thought they went very well and we had a great atmosphere – and we couldn’t believe the staggering 40 participants! Well done to everyone who took part – you all swam and ran your very best, and this was clear to see.
We would like to congratulate to those teams who were only made up on the day… and team ‘Messy’ in particular did superbly with 3 x TS1s in the team! We had one ‘family’ team who had 'no idea' – again brilliant to see them performing so well as a team – maybe they’ll be more next year!?

As well as Macauley Carline (Aged 15) and Jamie Beebee (Aged 16) that represented Wrekin College Triathlon Club in Hyde Park on 6th August with the National Aquathlon Championships, our very own lead coach, Melanie Humphreys, competed the following day on the 2012 Olympic Triathlon course in the age-group race along with 1000s of other triathletes.
Her efforts came after Helen Jenkins won in the ladies elite ITU race for England (and then preceded by the Brownlee brothers both stepping on the podium in the men's elite race). Perhaps inspired by Helen's success, Melanie did a superb performance herself over the Olympic Distance course setting an excellent example for all the children she coaches.

On 26th June 2011, Wrekin College Swimming & Triathlon Club took 5 team members to compete in the West Midlands Inter Regional Championship (IRC) race. The event took place at Dorney Lake, Eton (a leading venue for senior and elite triathlon events) giving young people the opportunity to feel what it is like to compete on a grand stage. Dorney Lake is also the venue for the Rowing and Kayak events in the Olympic and Paralympic Games in 2012. Three of our triathletes took part within a High Performance Drafting race – which began with an open water swim, cycle on a technical, draft-legal circuit and finished with a run along the Lakeside. The three were Jamie Beebee (Aged 16), Macauley Carline (Aged 14) and Holly Barnett (Aged 13); on what had to be one of the hottest days of the year, with over 1000 youngsters racing, our triathletes performed outstandingly. Joel Roura (Aged 12) and Jessica Humphreys (Aged 9) also competed in a non-drafting race – over a similar course.
The IRC race was used to select the WM team for the British Triathlon National Inter Regional Championships (National-IRCs) which brings together the most promising young triathletes from around Great Britain; each region sends a team of 14 triathletes in three age groups to represent them. This race posted some stiff competition for our athletes as no fewer than 4 other regions had chosen this race as their own IRC qualifier! Qualification, within the West Midlands is always strongly contested and the WM Triathlon England (TE) committee had decided on a 'first across the line' selection policy – only 2 places are available for each of the categories eligible (TS2 – Youths). Our team put on some gutsy performances and achieved great results.

Congratulations to Wrekin College Swimming & Triathlon Clubs very own Paige Norry-Addison (Aged 13) who has been selected to attend the ASA England Talent Development Programme and will attend training camps during September and December 2011 at Coventry Leisure Centre along with all the other top swimmers from within the West Midlands Region.
The camp will be predominately skill based and be a positive experience for the swimmers. The ASA Talent Development Programme envisage the camp to be a stepping stone for these swimmers to move forward with there swimming careers, and hopefully onto podium success.
Thousands of children go through the ASA's club structure every year but only a handful ever progress to national squads. The ASA has a development pathway to ensure that once a child's talent is identified it is nurtured to help them reach their full potential.
As a sport it can take 10 years to produce a champion so in most cases a youngster will be 'spotted' within their club environment and nurtured within their club.

The British Youth Aquathlon Championships took place at Hyde Park, London on Saturday 6th August 2011. This event was part of the World Cup Dextro Energy Triathlon Series presented by Tata Steel – the biggest triathlon event of the year - and provided a fantastic opportunity for young British talent from all regions to rub shoulders with the senior elite. The race provides a unique race experience and atmosphere in front of thousands of spectators.
Over the weekend top triathletes such as Helen Jenkins, Jonathan and Alistair Brownlee were competing along with over 5,000 age-group athletes.
Macauley Carline (Aged 15) was one of the youngest competitors of the weekend being in his first year within the youth category. However, this did not daunt his performance! His race consisted of a 400m open water swim, which took place in the Serpentine, followed by a 2.5km run within Hyde Park, the finish was down the elite finishing straight amongst a packed home crowd and an electric atmosphere, ensuring an incredible world-class event experience!
